Our family began visiting Sunriver in 2003 when our daughter was just 18 months. It was August and we spent three days enjoying the late summer sun and fresh smells of the lodgepole pines and juniper. We were hooked and returned the following two Augusts, trying a different neighborhood each time as we learned more about the community – and the places we enjoyed most. We don’t know exactly what it is about Sunriver that kept drawing us back, but each time was magical and made us want to come back even more. Regardless of the season, there’s always something to love about Sunriver – and Central Oregon. Think of it as base camp for your outdoor adventures. Ski, Snowboard or Snowshoe the many trails in the winter then enjoy a dip in the hot tub under the stars. Or hike to Benham Falls or around the many lakes nearby in summer. Then fire up the BBQ and enjoy a glass of wine as the sun sets. Occasionally you’ll see deer wandering through the meadow out your door.

What do we love most? The bike-riding on the seemingly endless pathways – riding to the Marina, the stables to feed the horses, an along the Deschutes river around to the lodge where we stop for an Italian soda before continuing on. Or maybe it’s the two-hour float trip down the Deschutes on a warm summer day – basking in the sun, solitude and incredible scenery.
Our next trip was New Year’s 2006 and the first time we rented one of the Meadow Houses. And we never wanted to leave. Maybe it was the Volcanic rock fireplace and rustic wood ceilings. Or simply the open layout that seemed to just fit our small family perfectly. We returned the following New Year’s for nearly a week in another Meadow House. Again, magical. Sunriver Resort puts on an incredible array of activities for families – I know the Bend Magic show captivated our daughter. It was on this trip that we decided that if the right one came available, we’d see if we could make this work as it was the perfect getaway home for us. We hope it’s perfect for you too.
Some prefer the quiet solitude of fall and winter while others prefer the bustling activity during Summer. But if you have kids, it’s always time to stop at Goody’s for Ice Cream and Candy. Just ask our daughter. And if you’re a rock hound, Sunriver Rock and Gem has a great collection and Doug will be there to educate your kids on the many facets of rocks and rock hunting.
